In 1967 in a laboratory in the Louvre, a radiologist discovers a picture underneath Edouard Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe.

The composition of the pictures is the same, but the style is very different. Clearly, the original canvas was painted over by someone other than Manet.

The story proper follows the creation of Le déjeuner and Olympia. The events of 1862 and 1863 are narrated by Manet and Victorine Meurent, an eighteen year old Parisian, who modelled for both pictures.

The novel explores the nature of exploitation and looks at the single-mindedness of Meurent as she pursues her ambition to become a painter.
